The Karnataka High Court expressed sharp criticism towards actor and MNM leader Kamal Haasan over his remarks suggesting that “Kannada was born out of Tamil.” While reviewing a petition by Haasan aimed at preventing authorities from blocking the release of his film “Thug Life,” the court asserted that such statements from public figures can foster unrest and disharmony among communities. “There is no apology in it. You may be Kamal Haasan or anybody; you cannot hurt the sentiments of the masses,” the court stated, emphasizing the sensitive nature of linguistic identity in India.
Haasan’s comment, made during an audio release event for “Thug Life” in late May, ignited widespread protests in Karnataka, prompting the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) to announce a boycott of the film unless an apology was issued. With “Thug Life” set to be released on June 5, the actor sought legal recourse to ensure the film’s premiere amid concerns about possible disruptions.
In his petition, filed by Haasan’s production house Raaj Kamal Films International, he requested the High Court to restrain any individuals or groups from obstructing the film’s screening in Karnataka. The petition also called for police protection for the cast, crew, and theater owners, citing threats of violence stemming from the backlash against his comments.
KFCC president M Narasimhalu reiterated the organization’s position, stating, “Let Kamal Haasan go to court. We have not done anything illegal. But we will not allow the screening of ‘Thug Life’ in Karnataka unless he apologizes.”
Haasan’s legal team contends that his remarks were misinterpreted and intended to foster cultural unity between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. They assert that the actor’s statement was made in a friendly context during discussions with Kannada superstar Shiva Rajkumar, who has reportedly defended Haasan’s intentions. The petition argues that the backlash has been disproportionate and based on a misunderstanding, insisting that the film’s release should not be derailed by a misreading of Haasan’s comments.
In an attempt to mediate the situation, the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce has reportedly reached out to Haasan. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam, “Thug Life” is highlighted as a high-profile project featuring a star-studded cast, including Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan T R. With a budget estimated at ₹300 crore, the film marks Haasan’s second collaboration with Ratnam, following the cult classic “Nayakan.”
As the release date approaches, all eyes remain on the unfolding legal and public relations battle surrounding the film, which has become a focal point for discussions on regional pride and cultural sensitivity in India.
