The ancient power shrine Kamakhya Temple will host the ‘Ambubachi Mahayog’ starting June 22. Previously known as the ‘Ambubachi Mela,’ the event will now officially be referred to as ‘Mahayog,’ as announced by the government. During a press conference attended by Tourism Minister Ranjit Kumar Das, the minister revealed this name change, stating, “This change was made based on requests from the Dolai community and religious leaders to give more respect to the religious significance and spiritual experience.”

This year’s Mahayog will commence on June 22 at 2:56 PM and conclude on June 26 at 3:00 AM. During this period, the main door of the Kamakhya Temple will remain closed, reopening on June 26. The state government is preparing for the arrival of devotees, saints, and tourists from across the country and abroad.

The event is expected to cost around 4.53 crore rupees, with activities being coordinated across 24 departments, including tourism, health, electricity, water supply, police, traffic, and public transport. Arrangements such as special rest camps for devotees, mobile medical units, water tanks, and mobile toilets have been made, with specific enhancements for female devotees and senior citizens highlighted by the tourism department.

Notably, there will be no special privileges for VIP and VVIP attendees during this Ambubachi period. Minister Das emphasized that “all devotees are equal at the power shrine,” promoting religious equality and ensuring uniform arrangements for everyone. Many have expressed that the term ‘Mela’ carried a sense of commercialization, while the new term ‘Mahayog’ is expected to convey a deeper spiritual essence.
