Alaska Airlines Set to Soar: Exciting New Flights to Rome Launching Next Year!
Alaska Airlines is set to embark on its first European venture next year, introducing nonstop flights to Rome from Seattle. The Seattle-based airline announced that this new route will launch in May 2026, made possible by its recent acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, which brought a fleet of long-haul aircraft into its operations. Tickets for this eagerly anticipated service will be available for purchase starting this fall.
The new route will operate four times a week using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jets, enhancing Alaska’s commitment to establishing a global hub in Seattle. Alaska Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Harrison, highlighted the airline’s ambition, stating, “We are serious about building a global gateway out of Seattle, and we will serve the major demand markets.” This expansion comes in response to increasing traveler demand, especially from members of the airline’s Mileage Plan loyalty program who have expressed a desire for service to Rome.
Italy remains a hot destination for U.S. travelers, with Alaska’s competitors, including Delta and United Airlines, ramping up their own services to the country. These larger airlines have recently introduced new nonstop flights to both Sicily and smaller Italian cities, reflecting the strong appetite for travel to the region.
In addition to its forthcoming Rome route, Alaska Airlines has already kicked off service to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport and is preparing to offer flights to Seoul starting in September. Harrison reported that flights to Tokyo are currently operating at around 80% capacity, indicating robust interest in these international destinations. He also noted that the flights to Asia are expected to enhance cargo revenue for the airline, complementing its passenger services.
To make the most of this expansion, Alaska Airlines is working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to secure approval for a single operating certificate that will streamline its operations with the combined Hawaiian Airlines fleet. The airline anticipates receiving this key approval in the fourth quarter of this year.
As Alaska Airlines positions itself for a stronger international presence, the expansion of long-haul routes symbolizes not just an investment in additional destinations, but also a strategic move to compete more effectively in the global aviation market. The upcoming service to Rome is an exciting development for both the airline and travelers looking to explore more of Europe from the Pacific Northwest.
With these strategic expansions, Alaska Airlines aims to solidify its place as a prominent player in the aviation industry, meeting the evolving travel demands of its customers and reinforcing its commitment to providing quality service on international routes.
