Manipur Stranded: Widespread Damage as NH-2 Collapses in Nagaland
Landslides caused by heavy rainfall have severely affected roads across Nagaland, with agriculture also suffering in certain areas, officials reported on Tuesday. In Kohima district, significant land sinking occurred near the Kisama Heritage Village, and a major landslide disrupted the Kigwema-Mima-Chakhabama road.
Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang inspected the collapsed 50-meter section of NH-2 at Phesama village, which has cut off a vital connection between Nagaland and Manipur. Accompanied by members of the Public Works Department and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL), he assessed the damage and called for urgent repairs to restore connectivity.
Zeliang directed NHIDCL to establish an alternate route for stranded cargo trucks and commuters, emphasizing the highway’s critical role as a lifeline for Manipur. He noted that this is the third major road collapse at this location since 2013 and called for an overdue permanent solution. He and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio have petitioned the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval of an alternate route.
The road began sinking on the night of May 31, worsened by continuous rainfall, leaving about four feet of the highway compromised. Approximately 30 meters of the road collapsed by Monday, trapping a truck, though no casualties were reported. More than 100 goods-laden trucks heading to Manipur have been stranded since Sunday, prompting the district administration to open a one-way alternate route for light vehicles.
NHIDCL Executive Director RP Singh stated that creating a temporary road would require land acquisition and, if landowners cooperate, the work could be completed within ten days, weather permitting.
In Tuensang district, a landslide was reported in Phingjang Ward, along with road blockages on the Tobu road. A windstorm has also damaged an Anganwadi center in Phir Ahir village under the Longkhim sub-division.
Continuous rain in Kiphire district has led to multiple landslides and road blockages affecting routes between Khongiri and Mimi villages, and also on the road from 2 Junction to Pungro Town. Agricultural damages were noted in Moya and Pungro villages as well.
In Meluri district, landslides damaged the Village Guard Office, while flooding from the Araju River affected paddy fields in Reguri village, and a retaining wall collapse in Wutsi Colony endangered a residential property.
Noklak district faced road blockages on major routes, including Noklak-Chingmei-Tuensang and Noklak-Pangsha, significantly disrupting travel. Storms and heavy rains have also damaged maize fields in Chassir village, with another landslide reported between Shamator and Kiphire.
Mokokchung district has seen a retaining wall collapse at Mongsenbai Ward, damaging one home, while a similar incident in Luyong Ward affected a footpath and three houses. In Wokha district, severe winds downed multiple electric poles, causing power outages, and a landslide at Tribal Circuit Doyang impacted office facilities.
Zunheboto district and Peren district also reported landslides that blocked routes. Despite the infrastructure challenges, no casualties have been recorded. However, the government is urging residents to remain vigilant as monsoon conditions are expected to intensify, highlighting the need to prioritize safety and property protection.
