In a deeply troubling chain of events on Sunday night, Kovilpatti experienced two back-to-back murders that have sent shockwaves through the community. The first victim, a local driver identified as Pragatheeswaran from Valluvar Nagar, was fatally attacked on Kadalaiyur Road by a group of assailants wielding a sickle. Initial investigations suggest that the violence erupted from a dispute linked to a wedding banner implicated in a quarrel involving one of the suspects, Sathish.
Remarkably, within just 20 minutes of Pragatheeswaran’s death, another group targeted Sathish’s residence in Pudugramam. There, they assaulted his mother, Kasthuri, using sharp weapons. In a tragic twist, when Kasthuri’s brother, Shenbagaraj, attempted to intervene, he too was attacked. Kasthuri succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while Shenbagaraj was left with serious injuries.
Upon being alerted, the Kovilpatti East police swiftly responded to both locations, recovering the deceased and initiating postmortem examinations. To ensure safety and prevent further unrest, Pragatheeswaran’s body was transported to the Virudhunagar Government Hospital, and Kasthuri’s remains were sent to Tirunelveli Government Medical College and Hospital.
In a statement to The Hindu, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Albert John characterized Kasthuri’s murder as an act of spontaneous provocation triggered by the earlier incident involving Pragatheeswaran. He refuted rumors suggesting that communal tensions played a role in these murders, emphasizing that the suspects arrested thus far-a total of eight-come from various caste backgrounds.
The police have implemented a strong security presence in the Pudugramam area to avert any potential flare-ups. A formal case has been lodged at the Kovilpatti East police station and ongoing investigations are in full swing.
