Stay Informed: Latest COVID-19 Updates and Daily Case Tracking in India
Covid-19 cases in India have surpassed the 3,000 mark, fueled by the emergence of a new subvariant known as NB.1.8.1. This variant has been classified as a ‘Variant Under Monitoring’ by the World Health Organisation’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution. It is characterized by significant changes, although its epidemiological impact remains uncertain. At least one sample of this variant has been submitted to India’s Covid-19 genome sequencing consortium, INSACOG, from Tamil Nadu. In the past few weeks, the majority of sequenced samples have been BA.2 and JN.1 variants.
The recent surge in Covid-19 cases can be attributed to several factors. Experts point to a decline in immunity from vaccinations administered over a year ago, a relaxation in public behavior, and the emergence of the more transmissible NB.1.8.1 variant. Additionally, changes in weather and air quality may also contribute to the rise in respiratory infections.
As of the latest data from the Union Health Ministry, Kerala has reported the highest number of active Covid-19 cases at 1,336, followed by Maharashtra and Delhi. Tragically, four deaths have been recorded across the country in the last 24 hours, one each in Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.
