Sikkim Woman’s Alarming Allegations Spark Urgent Police Investigation into Obscene Video Call
A woman in Tadong, Sikkim, was shocked after receiving an obscene video call on WhatsApp, during which an unknown man allegedly exposed himself. The incident occurred on May 30, when the 31-year-old resident from Amdogaoli filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Sadar Police Station.
According to her complaint, the troubling series of events began the day before, on May 29, around 8:59 am. She received multiple video calls from an unidentified number on WhatsApp but initially ignored them, considering them unimportant. However, when the caller persisted and attempted to contact her again at 9:03 am, she answered, mistakenly believing it to be a call from a co-worker. To her horror, she found that the caller was exposing his private parts on the screen.
“I was horrified,” the victim stated in her police report. “I thought it was someone I knew, but what I saw was completely unacceptable. No one should have to go through this.”
Following the incident, she confided in a friend, who decided to confront the culprit. Upon calling the perpetrator, the friend challenged him, asking, “Don’t you feel ashamed, making video calls to women and showing such things?” According to the FIR, the unidentified caller responded dismissively with a casual “Haan Haan Haan,” before abruptly ending the conversation when threatened with legal action.
The woman reported the incident to Sadar Police Station, resulting in the registration of an FIR under sections 75 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which address sexual harassment and the outrage of a woman’s modesty, respectively. The case also invokes section 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, concerning the transmission of sexually explicit content. Authorities at Sadar Police Station are currently investigating the case and working to trace the unknown assailant.
