Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer remained resilient after his team suffered a heartbreaking defeat in Qualifier 1 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Mullanpur on Thursday. The match did not go in Punjab’s favor; they lost the toss, were compelled to bat first, and subsequently crumbled under pressure, offering their bowlers a meager target to defend.
Bengaluru’s bowling attack proved too strong, as they easily chased down Punjab’s paltry total of 101 runs, clinching the match by eight wickets with 60 balls to spare-marking one of the quickest wins in the history of the prestigious league.
Following the match, Shreyas pointed out that variable bounce on the pitch contributed to his team’s struggles at bat. However, he emphasized that his squad would not hide behind excuses, acknowledging the need to adapt their batting to match conditions.
“We need to improve our batting, particularly on this wicket. In all the games we’ve played here, there’s been some inconsistent bounce. We can’t justify our performance with excuses; as professionals, we must bat according to the situation,” Shreyas stated after the game. “We may have lost this battle, but the war isn’t over.”
Rather than attempting to dismiss the painful loss, Shreyas expressed a commitment to learn from it. He was confident in the plans and strategies they had developed for the match, noting that execution was the key factor in their downfall.
“This is not a day to forget, but we need to reassess our approach. We lost too many wickets in the first innings. There’s much to analyze going forward. I’m not questioning my decisions; honestly, our planning was spot on. We just failed to implement it on the field, and I can’t fault the bowlers given the low score we posted,” he added.
Despite the defeat, the Punjab Kings still have a chance to advance. They will travel to Ahmedabad for Qualifier 2, where they will face either the Mumbai Indians or Gujarat Titans, depending on the outcome of the Eliminator.
