Uncertainty Surrounds BJP’s Coal Inquiry: What’s at Stake?
The BJP’s fact-finding team, tasked with investigating claims of illegal coal mining and transportation in Meghalaya, appears to have produced little more than empty claims without any significant action. Led by Bernard Marak, the BJP vice president and Tura MDC, the team was initially given 40 days to compile evidence, which was later extended by two weeks. However, two months on, the whereabouts of the committee and its report remain unclear.
When questioned about the committee’s progress, AL Hek, Cabinet Minister and senior BJP leader, admitted he was unaware of any advancements made by the team. Hek indicated that the party’s state-level committee would take charge of the findings and make decisions accordingly.
In response to criticism suggesting that the state BJP’s efforts amounted to “all smoke and no fire,” Marak insisted, “Our duty is to find out whether the claims and allegations about illegal coal mining are true or not. We will submit facts.” This rhetoric, however, is typical in Meghalaya politics. The BJP had previously pledged to involve the CBI against the state government over illegal coal mining but soon became the first party to support the MDA 2.0 after the results of the 2023 Assembly elections were announced.
