Congress Honors Nehru on His 61st Death Anniversary in Margherita, Assam
On Tuesday, the Margherita Block Congress Committee held a solemn tribute to mark the 61st death anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna recipient. The ceremony took place at the Margherita Congress Bhawan and was led by Committee President Tara Prasad Dehingia and Vice President Devendra Pandey. They lit earthen lamps and placed floral offerings before Nehru’s portrait to honor his legacy as the architect of modern India.
In his address, Dehingia described Nehru as “a beacon of progress and unity,” highlighting his far-sighted leadership that shaped India’s future through the establishment of key institutions such as the IITs, IIMs, ISRO, and AIIMS, as well as significant infrastructure projects like the Bhakra Nangal and Hirakud dams. He asserted that Nehru’s influence is evident beyond history books; it lives on through every institution and idea he championed, fostering a self-reliant India and laying the groundwork for scientific research and higher education.
Attending the ceremony were General Secretary Arup Sharma and Secretaries Mridul Buragohain and Jyotirmoi Nath, who echoed their gratitude for Nehru’s pivotal role in the freedom struggle and subsequent nation-building efforts. The event underscored the Congress party’s ongoing respect for Nehru’s ideals of democracy, secularism, and inclusive growth-principles that remain essential in guiding the country’s future trajectory.
