In a post shared on social media platform X, Goenka celebrated the country’s achievement, stating, “From the land of zero to the 4th largest economy in the world! India surpasses Japan with a GDP of $4.187 trillion.” He added, “A billion dreams, one unstoppable journey. Jai Hind.” Alongside his message, Goenka also posted an image depicting the world’s top 10 economies.
The announcement was reinforced by BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog, during a press conference held at the 10th NITI Aayog Governing Council Meeting. Citing data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Subrahmanyam confirmed India’s new status, stating, “We are a $4 trillion economy as I speak, and this is not my data. This is IMF data. India today is larger than Japan.” He emphasized the favorable geopolitical and economic conditions aiding India’s growth trajectory, projecting that if the current plans are adhered to, India could rise to the third-largest economy within the next 2.5 to 3 years.
The IMF’s World Economic Outlook report, released in April, anticipated India would surpass Japan, predicting a GDP of $4.19 trillion by 2025. Recent estimates align closely, with India’s nominal GDP projected at $4.187 trillion, marginally higher than Japan’s. This growth is reflected in India’s per capita income, which has nearly doubled from $1,438 in the financial year 2013-14 to an anticipated $2,880 by 2025.
Until 2024, India held the position of the fifth-largest economy. As it steps confidently into fourth place, the nation showcases its economic resilience and aspirations for future growth.
