Excitement at Umiam Lake: Join the Thrill of the 3rd Northeast Regatta!
Umiam Lake is the site of one of India’s top sailing events as the 3rd North East Regatta kicks off today. This six-day competition, running until May 29, features 79 sailors from nine sailing clubs across the country, further establishing Meghalaya’s place on the national sailing map.
Hosted by the Umiam Sailing Club in partnership with the Yachting Association of India and supported by the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, the regatta showcases five classes of boats: Optimist, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, 420, and 29er. The event’s inclusion of demanding double-handed boats like the 420 and 29er represents a significant advancement in the region’s sailing standards.
This year’s regatta highlights youth engagement and teamwork, fostering emerging talent and promoting a culture of water sports in the Northeast. It also supports Meghalaya’s broader tourism objectives, aiming to position Umiam Lake as a national hub for adventure and water sports.
Races will take place at the Water Sports Complex, providing thrilling competition and picturesque views for spectators. Organisers expect a lively turnout and hope the regatta will spark greater interest in sailing throughout the region.
