Excitement Builds: Southwest Monsoon Set to Soak Andhra Pradesh in Just 3 Days!
Heavy rainfall lashed Vijayawada on Saturday, accompanied by streaks of lightning illuminating the skyline. This deluge marks the early onset of the southwest monsoon, which arrived in Kerala a week ahead of its usual schedule. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh is expected to experience a similar early arrival of the monsoon within the next three days.
Typically, the monsoon reaches Andhra Pradesh around June 4, about four to seven days after its onset in Kerala. Currently, pre-monsoon showers are being felt across the three regions of South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema. May has been notably cooler than usual, with rainfall keeping daytime temperatures significantly below the 42-degree Celsius mark, as reported by the IMD.
Between May 1 and May 21, the state recorded 88.5 mm of rainfall, far exceeding the normal average of 39.2 mm-a remarkable 126% increase. The IMD forecasts heavy rain, along with lightning and gusty winds, in isolated areas of the state until May 30. The bulletin indicates that conditions are favorable for the southwest monsoon’s advancement into Andhra Pradesh, as well as neighboring states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
A low-pressure area is anticipated to form over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27, which may further contribute to the projected heavy rainfall in the state. On May 24, for instance, Ichchapuram in Srikakulam district received the highest daily total of 46.25 mm of rainfall, according to real-time data from the Andhra Pradesh State Development and Planning Society.
As the state braces for more rain, both farmers and residents remain hopeful that the monsoon’s early arrival will bolster local agriculture and replenish water resources. With the IMD’s predictions indicating more wet weather ahead, populations in affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions against potential flooding and adverse conditions.
As citizens across the state prepare for the anticipated monsoon, this early spell of rain signals a significant change in the seasonal climate, vital for the agricultural landscape that thrives heavily on moisture during this time of year.
Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses.
