Unlock Financial Relief: MCD Launches Game-Changing One-Time Property Tax Amnesty Scheme!

Delhi’s Municipal Corporation (MCD) has introduced a one-time property tax amnesty scheme under the Sumpattikar Niptaan Yojana (SUNIYO), allowing property owners to settle their dues in a streamlined manner. This initiative, launched during the first House session after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regained control of the civic body, marks a significant policy shift following a nearly three-year hiatus.

The SUNIYO scheme permits property owners to clear outstanding tax dues by paying the principal amounts for the financial year 2025-26 and the preceding five years, starting from 2020-21. The MCD has announced that all outstanding dues prior to 2020-21, including penalties and interest, will be waived, providing considerable relief for many residents facing financial constraints.

During the five-hour session, members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) voiced various concerns, particularly about the recent appointment of a new Leader of the House and the introduction of additional user charges for door-to-door garbage collection. AAP leaders contended that these decisions were made unilaterally by MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar without proper consultation while AAP was in power.

In a response to the growing discontent, Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh took decisive action by announcing the removal of these user charges from property tax bills. This decision comes at a time when public criticism of additional civic levies is on the rise, indicating a shift toward addressing the concerns of Delhi’s citizens.

Former AAP mayor Mahesh Kumar and the party’s new Leader of Opposition, Ankush Narang, expressed their discontent through slogans during the session. In a move to stabilize leadership, Mayor Singh officially appointed BJP’s Satya Sharma as the new Leader of the House. This appointment comes after the previous Leader, Mukesh Goel, left AAP and is now among 16 rebel councillors who have established the Indraprastha Vikas Party (IVP). These councillors have cited allegations of neglect and non-performance within the civic body as reasons for their departure.

The introduction of the property tax amnesty scheme along with leadership changes in the MCD underscores the BJP’s strategy to re-establish authority in local governance while addressing longstanding issues faced by residents. As the civic body moves forward, further developments are expected regarding its approach to property taxation and service delivery, which will be closely monitored by both citizens and political observers alike.

In conclusion, the MCD’s amnesty scheme may represent a critical step in easing the financial burden on property owners, aiming to revitalize engagement with Delhi’s residents and restore confidence in municipal governance.
