PNG School Celebrates Year-long Centennial: A Remarkable Journey Concludes!
GANGTOK: The year-long centennial celebration of Paljor Namgyal Girls’ (PNG) School concluded on Wednesday with a grand 101st Founder’s Day celebration held at the school premises. Urban Development Minister Bhoj Raj Rai served as the chief guest for the event, which also included notable attendees such as Health Minister GT Dhungel, MLAs Delay Namgyal Barfungpa and LN Nepal, and Walter H. Scott, the great-grandson of founder Dr. Mary H. Scott. Former principal Jem Pandi N. Targain, current principal Ivan D. Lepcha, along with PNG School alumni, teaching and non-teaching staff, students, and parents were also present.
Founder’s Day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Mary Hepburn Scott, the school’s founder. The theme for the centennial celebration, which spanned from May 21, 2024, to May 21, 2025, was ‘Blazing New Path’ and featured a series of phased events. Minister Rai congratulated the school on reaching this monumental milestone and expressed gratitude to all past and present principals for their roles in delivering quality education and shaping successful students.
“PNG School is renowned not just in Sikkim but globally for its high-standard education. It has produced numerous women leaders, professionals, and advocates in various fields. Speaking personally, my wife is an alumna, and we hold this institution in high regard for its commitment to empowering women and girls from Sikkim. PNG School is a blessing to our state,” he remarked.
Rai also urged students to expand their aspirations beyond traditional government jobs, emphasizing that education should be about creating meaningful lives rather than merely securing employment. “Our upbringing often taught us to chase jobs, but such roles can sometimes render us subservient. Adjust your perspective and strive to be your own boss,” he added.
On this significant occasion, Minister Dhungel and Jem Pandi N. Targain were recognized for their contributions. Principal Ivan D. Lepcha presented a report detailing the centennial activities, which included a retreat for teachers, sports day, alumni interactions, a literary festival, cultural programs, and a grand closing event. The inaugural major event, a Theme Run, saw participation from 15,000 individuals, including students, alumni, staff, and supporters.
During the celebration, guests unveiled a special cover aimed at commemorating the occasion by India Post, along with the PNG School History Book and the Centennial Magazine. The festivities also included a play titled ‘Reflecting Back, Blazing Ahead’ presented by the students, and a performance by the PNG Pipe Band.
Founded in 1924 by Scottish missionary Dr. Mary Hepburn Scott and formally structured in 1944, PNG School was named after the then Crown Prince of Sikkim.
