
Assam Rifles DG Acknowledges Valor of 105-Year-Old Gallantry Awardee in Nagaland
Director General of the Assam Rifles, Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera, recently visited the Assam Rifles Battalion in Mokokchung, Nagaland, to assess security in the region. During this visit, he also took the opportunity to meet with Havildar Mering Ao, SC (Retd), a 105-year-old veteran of the Assam Rifles, regarded as one of the force’s most distinguished members.
Born on November 15, 1920, Havildar Mering Ao served in the 3rd Battalion Assam Rifles and is celebrated as the oldest gallantry award winner in the history of the force. His military career includes participation in World War II, where he fought in significant battles in Kohima and Burma. Notably, in 1960, he demonstrated extraordinary bravery during a counter-insurgency operation in Nagaland, where he killed one insurgent and injured two others.
In recognition of his valor, Mering Ao was honored with the Ashok Chakra Class III, which later became known as the Shaurya Chakra, presented to him by then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad on April 21, 1960. His life of service continues to inspire many, symbolizing the unwavering spirit and commitment of the Assam Rifles.
During the visit, Lt. Gen. Lakhera presented Mering Ao with a token of appreciation, acknowledging his legendary contributions and lifelong dedication to the nation. This heartfelt interaction underscored the Assam Rifles’ commitment to honoring its heroes and preserving their legacy, marking a significant moment that resonates with the ethos of service and sacrifice embedded in the organization’s history.
