Transform Your Kitchen: Powerful Standard Cooking Oil Packs Take a Stand Against Deceptive Traders!
Traders have taken advantage of relaxed regulations introduced in 2022 regarding the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, which permitted more flexible packaging options. This change has led to the sale of non-standard weights, such as 800 grams, 810 grams, and 850 grams, being marketed as 1 kg packs. Consequently, consumers are often charged full prices for these lesser quantities, generating significant concern about unfair trade practices and undermining consumer trust.
In response to this growing issue, the government plans to reinstate standard pack sizes for cooking oil, specifically 5 kg, 2 kg, 1 kg, 500 grams, and 200 grams, to combat pricing manipulation. This decision coincides with a sharp increase in India’s cooking oil consumption, which surged from 24.6 million tonnes in 2020-21 to an estimated 28.9 million tonnes in 2022-23.
A spokesperson from the consumer affairs ministry noted, “We are reviewing the complaints regarding unfair trade practices related to disparities between the price and the actual weight of edible oil packs. It’s a bit tricky for consumers to calculate the price of a pack weighing 800 grams, but it’s much easier for the same consumer to understand the cost of a standard 2 kg or 500 gm pack.”
Consumer pricing data reveals that as of May 20, the average retail price of groundnut oil was ₹188.82 per kg, remaining relatively stable compared to ₹188.76 per kg last year. However, mustard oil has experienced a significant price increase, now at ₹170.66 per kg, up from ₹135.50 per kg a year earlier. Other oils, including soya, sunflower, and palm oil, have also seen notable spikes in cost, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations and clearer pricing structures.
The government is actively reassessing the existing packaging norms and may revert to older standards following consultations with industry stakeholders. This review aims to enhance transparency and foster fair trade practices, especially given the confusion consumers face with the current pricing system. Stakeholders are being encouraged to provide their input on the matter.
The Indian edible oil market, valued at $4.39 billion in 2024, is anticipated to grow significantly, projected to reach $6.49 billion by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate of 6.79%, according to TechSci Research. Industry leaders expressed support for reinstating standardized packaging, which they argue is vital for ensuring consistent retail pricing and compliance with the Legal Metrology Act.
Sudhakar Desai, president of the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA), stated, “Standardized packaging ensures that price comparisons are simple, transparent, and fair. It creates a level playing field for both consumers and producers, encouraging trust and long-term brand value.”
The 2021 amendment to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules mandated the display of the Unit Sale Price (USP) on all packaged goods to facilitate easier price comparisons for consumers. However, the subsequent 2022 amendment removed certain requirements that set limits on standard quantities for essential commodities, including edible oils. This shift has allowed manufacturers greater flexibility in packaging sizes but has also resulted in an influx of non-standard packs.
As the situation develops, the government’s initiatives to restore fairness and transparency in the cooking oil market will be closely monitored, with the hope of rebuilding consumer confidence in this essential commodity sector.
