Nagaland’s Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio announced that the state government is actively working to complete the new High Court complex in Meriema, near Kohima. During a tree plantation program organized by the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) Kohima, he expressed disappointment that Nagaland has not received any grants from the Government of India for this project, contrasting it with other northeastern states like Meghalaya, Assam, Tripura, and Manipur, which have received full funding. So far, over Rs. 200 crores has been invested in the construction, but an additional Rs. 300 crores is needed to make the complex operational, including staff quarters.

Dr. Rio mentioned that he has previously approached the Ministry of Home Affairs, seeking amendments in parliament for a separate High Court for Nagaland. He emphasized the importance of the state doing its part in the justice delivery process. Despite challenges, he remains hopeful that the new High Court complex will serve as a beacon of justice, facilitating harmony in society.

Justice Kakheto Sema of the Gauhati High Court remarked on the significance of the tree planting initiative, stating that it represents a commitment to future generations. He expressed gratitude to Dr. Rio and Law & Justice Advisor TN Mannen for their unwavering support for the judiciary. He noted that, under Dr. Rio’s leadership, the state government has allocated over Rs. 150 crores for the new High Court building in the past two years, showcasing a strong commitment to enhancing the justice system.

Justice Sema also acknowledged the success of the recent State Mega Legal Services Camp, crediting the pivotal role of legal practitioners in the justice system. He underscored that lawyers are not just advocates but defenders of the rights of the vulnerable, emphasizing their moral responsibility. The call for a separate High Court is not merely an administrative step; it signifies constitutional dignity and equal access to justice, he affirmed.

He stressed that establishing a separate High Court would strengthen the state’s legal framework and ensure justice is administered with efficiency and empathy. Justice Sema reiterated the collective aspiration of Nagaland’s people for a judicial institution that is worthy of its identity and future. The event concluded with contributions from Nagaland’s Law & Justice Advisor TN Mannen and Senior Advocate CT Jamir, the HCBA president, and was chaired by HCBA secretary Joshua Sheqi.
