Assam CM Calls for Gandhi to Remove Gaurav Gogoi from Congress Team

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has voiced serious concerns regarding the inclusion of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi in the proposed all-party delegations aimed at conveying India’s message of zero tolerance towards terrorism, particularly in the wake of ‘Operation Sindoor’. Sarma has urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi not to allow Gogoi to represent India abroad, citing doubts related to Gogoi’s past actions and associations with Pakistan.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma stated that Gogoi has not denied a reported two-week stay in Pakistan, adding that credible documents indicate his wife received a salary from a Pakistan-based NGO while engaged in work in India. He remarked, “In the interest of national security and beyond partisan politics, I urge opposition leader Rahul Gandhi not to include this individual in such a sensitive and strategic assignment.”

Highlighting the national security implications, Sarma emphasized the need for vigilance in delegating representatives for sensitive discussions about terrorism. He called for caution in selecting individuals for such critical roles, which require an unequivocal commitment to India’s security interests.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh responded to the controversy by clarifying that the party had submitted a list of four MPs to Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju, as requested, to articulate India’s stance on terrorism emanating from Pakistan. The proposed MPs included former Union Minister Anand Sharma, Gaurav Gogoi, Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain, and Lok Sabha MP Raja Brar. Notably, senior Congress MP Shashi Tharoor was absent from this list, despite having publicly announced that he had received an invitation from the government to lead one of the delegations.

A statement from the Parliamentary Affairs Ministry reiterated that these all-party delegations aim to showcase India’s unified stance and resolute approach in combating terrorism in all forms. “They would carry forth to the world the country’s strong message of zero tolerance against terrorism,” it stated. Seven all-party delegations are scheduled to visit key partner countries, including those in the UN Security Council, later this month, to emphasize India’s ongoing efforts against cross-border terrorism in light of Operation Sindoor.
