The trailer for Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par premiered on Tuesday evening, marking the actor’s return to the big screen after three years. This film aims to showcase Khan’s distinctive filmmaking style, but it quickly became mired in controversy. Shortly after the trailer’s release, Aamir Khan Productions shared a delayed message on social media congratulating the "heroes of Operation Sindoor," leading many to question the timing, especially since Khan had previously remained silent on the issue.

The message praised the Indian armed forces for their response to terrorist activities, specifically mentioning the retaliatory action taken after the Pahalgam attack. It read, "Saluting the heroes of Operation Sindoor. Heartfelt gratitude to our armed forces for their courage, bravery, and unwavering commitment to the security of our nation. Thank you to the Hon’ble Prime Minister for his leadership and resolve," and ended with "Jai Hind." While some fans supported the message, others criticized it as "too little too late," given that the operation had taken place over a week prior.

By Thursday morning, the hashtag #BoycottAamirKhan began trending on social media platforms. Critics expressed their discontent, claiming the timing of the message was suspicious. One tweet insinuated that Khan broke his silence just to promote his film, noting, "This (snake emoji) broke his ‘maun vrat’ to promote his movie Sitaare Zameen Par." Others echoed similar sentiments, urging audiences to "teach him a lesson" regarding his previous lack of public support for national issues.

Khan’s history with social media is notable; he is no longer active on these platforms, leading his production house to post on his behalf. The backlash intensified with tweets calling out the perceived inconsistency in Khan’s messaging related to national sentiments. One tweet stated, "He hates India. He felt unsafe in India. Not one post supporting the Indian Army in war. #BoycottAamirKhan."

Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par serves as a spiritual sequel to the acclaimed 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. The film features ten debut actors and focuses on Khan’s character, a basketball coach mentoring a team of individuals with intellectual disabilities. It also stars Genelia D’Souza and is set to be released on June 20.
