Asia’s Airport Expansion Race Intensifies: Singapore’s Changi T5 Set to Soar with Unmatched Ambition!
Asia is poised for a travel renaissance, with countries actively preparing to capitalize on a surge in demand. On Wednesday, Singapore’s Changi Airport marked the beginning of a significant expansion by breaking ground on its fifth terminal, which is expected to open its doors in the mid-2030s. This ambitious project encompasses a sprawling 1,080 hectares and will nearly double the airport’s current capacity, enabling it to accommodate 140 million passengers annually, up from 90 million.
Changi Airport, recognized by Skytrax as the “World’s Best Airport” for a record 13th time in 2025, welcomed 67.7 million passengers in 2024. Airports capable of handling more than 100 million travelers each year are designated as mega airports, and three of the world’s ten existing mega airports are located in Asia: Beijing, Tokyo, and Shanghai. The Airport Council International (ACI) anticipates that air travel in the region will grow by nearly 7% over the next 25 years, prompting extensive development across Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. These regions are expected to invest a staggering $240 billion towards upgrading current facilities and constructing new airports between 2025 and 2035.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the strategic decision behind Terminal 5. He noted, “Over the longer term, air travel is on a rising trajectory, and the bulk of the growth will take place here in the Asia-Pacific region.” Wong elaborated that, with the new terminal, Changi aims to expand its network to 200 cities, up from the 170 it currently connects. “Changi has linked our small island nation to the world, driving our growth as a hub for tourism, aerospace, and logistics,” he stated, highlighting that the aviation sector contributes significantly to Singapore’s GDP.
Competition among Asian airports is intensifying. Major hubs are transforming their infrastructures to enhance passenger experiences and expand services. Hong Kong International Airport recently commissioned a third runway and is enhancing Terminal 2, aiming to serve 120 million travelers and handle 10 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2035. Similarly, Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport opened a third runway in September 2024, following the launch of a new satellite terminal. In South Korea, Seoul’s Incheon International Airport completed its Phase 4 expansion in December, raising its capacity to 106 million passengers per year, making it the world’s third-largest airport.
According to Thomas Pellegrin, a Transportation, Hospitality, and Services Sector Leader at Deloitte Southeast Asia, Asia has emerged as the epicenter of air travel growth post-Covid-19. The region’s expanding middle class and high urbanization rates are driving increased demand for air travel. Pellegrin asserts that passenger demand growth in Asia is projected at 7.9% in the near term and 5.1% in the long term, outpacing mature markets and placing immense pressure on existing infrastructure to accommodate near double the number of passengers by 2043.
Changi’s Terminal 5 is integral to Singapore’s broader goal of boosting tourism revenue—projected to grow from a record $29.8 billion in 2024 to between $47 billion and $50 billion over the next 15 years. The city’s “Tourism 2040” strategy targets growth from both business and stopover travelers, with officials aiming to triple revenue from business-related tourism, as articulated by Grace Fu, Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment.
As transit and transfer passengers currently constitute one-third of Changi’s traffic, Terminal 5 and the associated Changi East development, including a third runway and an industrial zone, are crucial for Singapore to maintain and enhance its position as a leading air hub. Pellegrin concludes, “All these factors contribute to Singapore’s significant ‘soft power’ on the global stage.”
