A groundbreaking device designed to monitor breast milk production in real time could transform the breastfeeding experience for parents, particularly those with newborns in the NICU. Researchers have developed a compact, wireless system that utilizes bioimpedance technology to track changes in the electrical properties of breast tissue as milk is expressed. This innovative approach allows for accurate measurements of milk volume, providing vital information for parents concerned about their baby’s nutritional intake.

The team, led by Avila at Rice University, utilized bioimpedance—commonly used to measure body fat—by analyzing how different tissues conduct electricity. The device’s effectiveness hinges on its ability to quantify the changes in milk volume with precision. By creating test models that mimic breast anatomy and conducting rigorous simulations, the researchers established a reliable connection between electrical signals and the volume of milk exiting the breast. “Our simulation results matched the trends of experiments and human clinical studies,” Avila noted, highlighting the collaboration between the experimental and clinical teams.

The final device resembles a flexible cord that comfortably wraps around the breast, featuring built-in electrodes that adhere gently to the skin. A small, lightweight base station, housing a rechargeable battery and Bluetooth technology for data transmission, sits between the electrodes. This setup allows for individual calibration, accommodating the unique breast shapes and sizes of different users. Prospective users can calibrate the device by using a breast pump connected to a marked bottle, enabling precise tracking of milk volume during pumping sessions.

In initial testing involving 12 breastfeeding mothers in various settings, the device demonstrated impressive reliability over a span of up to 17 weeks. “The device was just a few stickers placed on my breast,” said participant Julia Seitchick, a mother of three. “I really didn’t notice they were even there.” The mothers appreciated the opportunity to gain valuable insights into their milk supply, a source of anxiety for many breastfeeding parents.

The implications for NICU infants are particularly significant. Accurate monitoring of milk intake is crucial for premature babies and those recovering from surgeries, whose nutritional needs are stringent. “Having a sensor to monitor this would enable these babies to breastfeed more successfully with their mom,” said Robinson, a member of the research team. This technology promises to reduce uncertainties, allowing parents to know precisely how much their babies are consuming during feedings.

Looking to the future, the team envisions integrating this technology into comfortable breastfeeding bras to enhance usability. They are also committed to ensuring the device is effective across diverse skin tones. Potential future advancements could include capabilities to measure the refill rate of milk in the breast, offering insights on production over time.

Breastfeeding can be fraught with emotional stress, often exacerbated by uncertainties over milk supply. “Being able to remove one piece of uncertainty will really help decrease some of that stress and anxiety,” Wicks explained. This innovation aspires to provide reassurance and support to mothers navigating their breastfeeding journeys, making it a promising addition to maternal health technology. Supported by the Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics and other organizations, the study reflects a significant step forward in understanding and improving the breastfeeding experience.

The study, titled “A compact, wireless system for continuous monitoring of breast milk expressed during breastfeeding,” signals a new era of data-driven parenting, aiming to empower mothers and enhance the care of vulnerable infants.
