Justice BR Gavai Sworn In as 52nd Chief Justice of India – A New Era Begins
Guwahati: Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on Wednesday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at a brief ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Gavai took the oath in Hindi.
Justice Gavai succeeds Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who retired on Tuesday after reaching the age of 65. Elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, Justice Gavai will serve for over six months, concluding his term on November 23. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several high-profile dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, among other Union Cabinet ministers. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and former President Ram Nath Kovind also graced the event with their presence.
Justice Gavai is the son of the late RS Gavai, who served as Governor of Bihar, Kerala, and Sikkim and was a prominent leader in the Republican Party of India (Gavai faction). He began his legal journey in 1985, initially working alongside the late Raja S Bhonsale, a former Advocate General and High Court Judge, before establishing his own practice at the Bombay High Court in 1987.
CJI Gavai has participated in several Constitution benches within the Supreme Court, contributing to landmark verdicts. Notably, he was part of a five-judge Constitution bench that unanimously upheld the Centre’s decision to revoke provisions of Article 370, which previously conferred special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
