A 21-year-old man from Mangnam in the Gyalshing district tragically lost his life after drowning in the Lodung River near Bhaluthang. The victim has been identified as Arjun Gurung, the son of Govardhan Gurung, who was residing in Langang at the time of the incident.
According to a complaint lodged by his cousin, Jas Bahadur Gurung, the tragic event occurred around 11:30 a.m. on May 9. Arjun was with seven friends en route to Labing to attend a football match when they decided to take a break and swim in the Lodung River. During this recreational pause, Arjun accidentally drowned, and efforts to rescue him were unsuccessful.
The police recorded the First Information Report (FIR) at approximately 2:30 p.m. that same day, prompting immediate action from authorities who began a preliminary investigation. An inquest was conducted by Shri Garap D. Bhutia, the Gyalshing Block Development Officer, with family and independent witnesses present.
In accordance with standard procedures, a medico-legal autopsy was carried out at the District Hospital in Gyalshing. After the post-mortem examination, Arjun’s body was handed over to his legal guardians for the last rites.
Initial investigations revealed no indications of foul play, leading authorities to conclude that the drowning was an accident without any suspicious circumstances. However, the case remains under investigation as police explore all possible angles to ensure there was no negligence or misconduct involved.
An Unnatural Death (UD) case has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, under FIR No. 09/2025. Further inquiries are ongoing to determine the precise cause and circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.
