New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has executed targeted strikes on military installations close to Karachi in Pakistan, according to Air Marshal AK Bharti, the Director-General of Operations for the IAF. During a special briefing on Sunday evening, Air Marshal Bharti described the operation as part of India’s “measured and calibrated” response to ongoing Pakistani aggression, which has included drone and missile strikes, as well as artillery fire across the border.
Among the key targets was a surface-to-air missile site located at Malir Cantonment, roughly 35 kilometers from Karachi. The Air Force further targeted a radar facility in Lahore, which is thought to have been a Chinese-made HQ-9, reportedly neutralized by Israeli-made HARPY drones. Another strike occurred near Gujranwala in Punjab province, expanding the scope of the operation aimed at degrading Pakistan’s military capabilities.
These revelations follow a confirmation of the Indian Navy’s pivotal role in Operation Sindoor, a direct military response to the terror attack in Pahalgam linked to the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba. Vice Admiral AN Pramod disclosed that naval assets, including carrier battle groups and submarines, were positioned outside Karachi’s harbor to constrain Pakistani maritime operations. He emphasized the Navy’s readiness to execute strikes on both land and sea targets at a moment of India’s choosing, compelling Pakistani naval and air units into a defensive stance.
The precision of Operation Sindoor became evident with an overnight strike on May 7, lasting 25 minutes, which targeted multiple terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that over 100 terrorists were killed as vital terror infrastructure was dismantled. This pre-emptive action provoked a swift counter-response from Pakistan, resulting in significant aerial exchanges. Both nations reported attacks targeting military establishments that led to air raid sirens and power outages in cities including Chandigarh, Jaisalmer, and Pathankot.
In this escalating conflict, both sides have accused each other of civilian casualties, with reports of injuries from drone strikes in Ferozepur, Punjab, and the fatality of a government official in Rajouri, Jammu and Kashmir. Notably, the combat also resulted in the downing of fighter jets from both countries, with India claiming to have hit a U.S.-made F-16 and Pakistan asserting it downed an Indian Rafale, a claim later denied by Indian sources.
As the conflict unfolded, the air defenses of both countries were put to the test, successfully intercepting missiles launched by each side. India carried out “swift and calibrated responses” targeting Pakistani air bases, resulting in strikes on sites in Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala, and Rahim Yar Khan; Air Marshal Bharti noted that these actions accounted for approximately 20 percent of the Pakistan Air Force’s infrastructure.
In light of these exchanges, India reported limited damage from Pakistani strikes on its air bases in Udhampur, Pathankot, Adampur, and Bhuj. The operations reached a tactical pause approximately 100 hours into the conflict, facilitated by a ceasefire negotiated by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. However, Pakistan allegedly breached the ceasefire agreement soon after its announcement.
General Upendra Dwivedi, India’s Army Chief, indicated that military bases along India’s western borders have been granted authorization to initiate countermeasures if the ceasefire terms are violated again, reinforcing India’s preparedness for a robust military response should tensions escalate.
