Independent candidate Dilip Baruah has delivered a significant defeat to the ruling BJP by winning the No. 4 Central Bajali Zilla Parishad seat, a constituency long considered a bastion of senior minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass. Despite the BJP’s strong campaign efforts, which included positioning Ranjit Saloi—an aide closely connected to Minister Dass—before the voters, they overwhelmingly chose Baruah instead. Even with the added support of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who personally campaigned in the area, Saloi was unable to secure victory.
Baruah garnered 14,072 votes, significantly outperforming Saloi, who managed to collect only 9,946 votes. This victory, with a margin of 4,126 votes, has sent shockwaves through political circles, indicating a growing dissatisfaction among the BJP’s traditional supporters in Bajali.
In his first remarks to the press following the win, Baruah expressed gratitude to the voters, affirming their pivotal role in shaping democracy. He stated, “The people have shown once again that in a democracy, they are the real rulers,” and emphasized the electorate’s reaffirmation of democratic values through this decisive outcome. His victory not only reflects a shift in local sentiment but also raises questions about the BJP’s grip on power in the region.
