Nagaland Students Demand Action: Blockade for Delayed Road Project
Amid ongoing delays in developing the national highway linking four districts of Nagaland to Kohima, the Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) initiated an indefinite blockade on NH-29 in the Kikruma area of Phek district on May 12. This action targeted the movement of vehicles associated with the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and its contractor responsible for the 29 km Kohima-Jessami National Highway project (Package 2).
The blockade stems from the “failure” of NHIDCL and its executing agency to address multiple demands, as stated by CSU president Pfhulo Sara. The union is calling for urgent repairs of potholes, the clearing of landslide debris, adequate drainage systems, and an acceleration of construction efforts.
Sara emphasized that despite numerous representations and a recent protest rally, the concerned agencies have not fulfilled their obligations, leading to significant hardship for commuters and the public. “Both agencies have not responded to our demands, and therefore, CSU was compelled to launch the blockade,” he told PTI.
With the monsoon season approaching, the deteriorating road conditions present a serious risk to commuters, according to the students’ organization. This highway is crucial for residents of Kikruma, Phek, Meluri, and Kiphire districts, underscoring the importance of timely infrastructure development in the region.
