CSU Moves to Block Government Vehicle Access Along NH-29: Major Impact Ahead

Kohima, May 11 (MExN): The Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has declared an indefinite blockade on the movement of NHIDCL, its contractor M/S Ratna Infrastructure Project Pvt. Ltd, and all government-registered vehicles along the NH-29 stretch, specifically the Chakhabama-Kikruma Package-II section, beginning at 6 AM on May 12. This decision follows what the CSU referred to as the “miserable failure” of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) and its executing agency to address the Union’s demands over a span of more than six months—from October 16, 2024, until May 11, 2025. The CSU indicated that both agencies have not fulfilled their commitments, leading to significant inconvenience for commuters and the wider public.

Despite issuing an ultimatum on May 2 and conducting a peaceful protest on May 10, the responses from NHIDCL and M/S Ratna were deemed “appalling and irresponsible” by the CSU. As a result, the Union felt compelled to take further action, urging all stakeholders to respect the blockade. The CSU cautioned that any incidents arising from this situation would rest solely with NHIDCL.

In a display of solidarity, the United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has backed the CSU, urging NHIDCL to give immediate and serious attention to the concerns raised. In a letter addressed to the Executive Director of NHIDCL’s Regional Office in Kohima, the USSC praised the CSU for bringing attention to the deteriorating condition of the Chakhabama–Kikruma road. This route is crucial not just for the Chakhesang region but is a vital lifeline for Kiphire district, facilitating movement, trade, education, and healthcare access. The USSC expressed hope that NHIDCL would demonstrate its commitment by prioritizing the timely and quality completion of the project for the benefit of the region.
