CPIM Leader Mariam Alexander Baby Accuses BJP of Terror in Tripura
Agartala, 11th May 2025: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM] has sharply criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Tripura, accusing it of detaching from the public and resorting to authoritarian measures to hold power. CPIM’s Central Committee General Secretary, Mariam Alexander Baby, along with Politburo member Jitendra Chowdhury, shared these concerns during a press conference at the party’s state office on Sunday.
In her address to the media, Baby highlighted the government’s growing isolation from the electorate, suggesting that the BJP is struggling to connect with the populace. To mask this disconnect, she alleges, the BJP is fostering an atmosphere of fear throughout the state. “The ruling party is resorting to intimidation and oppression instead of addressing the grievances of the people,” Baby stated.
Shifting focus to international relations, Baby raised questions about the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly criticizing the idea of foreign mediation. She expressed alarm over comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who hinted at a ceasefire between the two nations under his mediation. “Why is there a need for a third-party mediator when India and Pakistan can engage directly? The Indian Foreign Secretary has confirmed that a ceasefire was requested by Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations, which is a legitimate diplomatic move. However, the government needs to clarify why a foreign entity is involved,” she demanded.
Jitendra Chowdhury, a senior CPIM leader, emphasized the rising public discontent, accusing the BJP of undermining democratic principles and stifling dissent. “We are witnessing a disturbing level of political repression resembling authoritarianism,” Chowdhury remarked, noting that protests across Tripura have emerged over a range of issues, from deteriorating infrastructure to unpaid wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
He detailed incidents of vandalism against CPIM offices and violence against its workers in regions like Rajnagar, Dharmanagar, Udaipur, Mohanpur Manda, and Dukli sub-divisions. Additionally, Chowdhury critiqued the BJP’s “Khela Mela” initiative, suggesting it serves as a distraction from governance issues.
Chowdhury reaffirmed CPIM’s commitment to opposing what he labeled as “undemocratic and oppressive tactics” employed by the ruling party. He condemned purported efforts to incite panic among minority communities in Tripura.
In other developments, CPIM’s West Tripura District Committee Secretary Ratan Das and Krishna Rakshit have been appointed to significant positions within the state secretariat. Haribal Debnath and Himangshu, Secretary of Longtharai Valley, have been designated as invitee members, while senior CPIM leader Manik Dey also participated in the press briefing.
