Triumphant Steps: Tripura Celebrates World Health Day with Urgent Focus on HIV Awareness, Addiction Recovery, and Child Protection
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha Leads Rally to Combat Social Evils on World Health Day
Marching to mark World Health Day 2025, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha led a rally in Agartala, emphasizing the urgent need to address drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, and child marriage in the state. The event, organized by the Hepatitis Foundation of Tripura (HFT), highlighted the interconnectedness of these social evils, which hinder the path to a healthier society.
Saha, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, underscored the significance of these issues, stating, “These are not merely health concerns, but deep-rooted societal challenges that must be addressed to build a healthier and more progressive Tripura.” The chief minister expressed concern over the rise in HIV cases, particularly among injectable drug users, and pledged to strengthen Tripura’s healthcare system.
The rally, attended by hundreds of participants including doctors, nurses, medical students, health workers, school children, security personnel, and members of the general public, drew attention to the state’s broader vision of becoming a medical hub in the Northeast. Saha announced plans to set up a dedicated eye hospital, aligning with the state’s increasing focus on healthcare development. He encouraged residents to utilize the super-specialty medical facilities available within the state, rather than seeking costly treatment elsewhere.
Dr. Pradip Bhowmik, founder of the Hepatitis Foundation of Tripura and a prominent physician, also addressed the gathering. He emphasized the importance of maternal health care during pregnancy and advocated for greater awareness on preventing child marriage and promoting the well-being of the girl child. “Ensuring proper healthcare for pregnant mothers is essential to securing the health of future generations,” Bhowmik emphasized, also stressing the significance of healthy lifestyles in disease prevention.
The rally proceeded through Agartala’s main streets, with participants carrying placards and spreading messages focused on physical and mental well-being, healthy habits, and social awareness. World Health Day, observed globally on April 7, commemorates the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. Since 1950, it has served as a global platform to highlight pressing health issues and promote public health awareness. With Tripura witnessing rapid growth and increased investment, Saha’s rally aimed to raise awareness and stimulate collective efforts towards building a healthier and more progressive state.
