Gangtok’s Eco-Friendly Development in Question Amidst Construction Boom
The Citizen Action Party (CAP), led by President Ganesh Kumar Rai, has raised concerns over the transparency and environmental impact of several mega-projects under construction in Gangtok, Sikkim. During a recent site visit, Rai’s team highlighted the lack of public information and government accountability in the development process.
“Here, there is no signboard. People don’t even know what is being built here. Even local authorities are not communicating with the citizens,” Rai said during the inspection of construction sites near Ridge Park, Sadar Police Station, West Point Mall, and the upcoming Star Mall. The party has questioned whether Gangtok’s fragile ecosystem and limited infrastructure can withstand the rapid urban development underway.
CAP has pointed out that the projects are being carried out without adequate public consultation, citing the absence of government-led transparency and accountability. “There is a complete lack of transparency,” Rai emphasized. “These projects are being carried out in complete silence, and no one knows who is behind them or how many trees were cut to make way for them.” The party has demanded that the government publish detailed information about each project, including its purpose, developer, environmental impact, and approval status.
The Sikkim government has faced criticism for prioritizing urban development over environmental concerns, despite the state’s history of landslides and heavy rainfall. “The rapid disappearance of greenery in a disaster-prone state could have long-term consequences,” Rai warned. “These mega-projects may compromise the environmental integrity of our ecosystem.”
The party has also raised concerns about the displacement of local businesses by the construction of giant malls and high-rise developments. “These giant malls will not only affect the ecosystem but also harm the small businesses that have been serving people for decades,” Rai stated. He added, “We have people here who are capable and skilled. Why are they not being given these jobs? The lack of local hiring at construction sites is a matter of concern for us.”
Rai criticized the recurring contracts going to the same set of builders across successive governments, suggesting possible cronyism in the awarding of construction deals. He alleged that the same contractors who were active during the previous administration are still receiving major projects, calling for more scrutiny and public disclosure.
“We are not against development. But development must be sustainable, and it must be for the people, not just for a few,” Rai clarified, reiterating the party’s stance. To further investigate, the party plans to file Right to Information (RTI) applications to access official documents related to the projects and engage with local residents and shopkeepers to gather more input.
