Triumphant Triumph for Tripura: 16th Finance Commission Applauds State’s Stellar Performance and Tackles Crucial Issues
On January 31, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that the 16th Finance Commission delegation was impressed with the state’s performance following discussions aimed at enhancing public welfare. In a press briefing, CM Saha outlined key topics addressed during the meeting, including the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission and strategies for the comprehensive development of Tripura. A significant point of concern raised was the state’s estimated Rs. 15,000 crore loss due to devastating floods, along with topics concerning dearness allowance (DA) and infrastructure enhancements.
The Chief Minister highlighted a unique challenge facing Tripura—73% of its land is designated as reserved forest. This environmental constraint limits opportunities for large-scale industrial development. In light of this, the state has appealed for special considerations to help foster economic growth despite these restrictions.
While emphasizing the role of the Finance Commission as an advisory body, Saha expressed optimism that the Commission acknowledged Tripura’s concerns and appreciated the state’s adherence to financial discipline. The dialogues also touched on the direct allocation of funds to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and issues concerning the 8th Pay Commission, underscoring the government’s pledge to inclusive growth.
Saha reaffirmed Tripura’s commitment to aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vikshit Bharat,” stressing efforts towards making Tripura a developed state by 2047. Through these discussions and future guidance from the Finance Commission, the state aims to advance its socio-economic conditions notwithstanding its limitations, striving for sustainable progress that benefits all its residents.
