Eviction Threat Looms for 16 South Kamrup Villages over Aero City
PALASBARI, June 25 — Residents of 16 villages in the Palasbari and Azara revenue circles of south Kamrup say they are living in fear and uncertainty after reports surfaced of possible land acquisition and evictions for a proposed Aero City and a State government Satellite Township near Guwahati. Government notifications for valuation and acquisition have reportedly been issued for agricultural land in six villages, and local sources say documentation was being collected and expected to be submitted to the government by June 25.
The affected villages named by residents are Patgaon, Jobe, Sajjanpara, Rajapanichanda, Andherijuli, Rangapara, Kachari Allibari, Batabari, Matifuturi, Pachaniyapara, Jangalipara, Kamargaon, Lochana, Sathikarpa, Maliyata and Deur Ali. Villagers say that, although no official eviction order has been issued so far, intensified activity by the revenue department has increased anxiety across communities.
Revenue officials, village heads and local administrators have been collecting land-related documents in several villages. Government notifications are said to cover valuation and acquisition in Jobe, Pachaniyapara, Matifuturi, Deur Ali, Jangalipara and Kamargaon. Locals report that fields that would normally be busy with planting and labour at this time of year are instead seeing administrative work, reinforcing fears that displacement may be imminent.
The development plan envisages an Aero City to be developed by the Adani Group and a Satellite Township by the State government in the Rani-Bongara area, within the south Kamrup Tribal Belt and Block adjoining Guwahati. Plans indicate about 6,662 bighas of land would be made available for the projects, with roughly 2,662 bighas earmarked for the Aero City and the remainder for the Satellite Township.
Villagers warn the projects could displace thousands, costing households their homes, agricultural land and primary livelihoods. For many families in these villages, agriculture remains the sole source of sustenance, and residents have questioned what rehabilitation or compensation measures, if any, would be offered in the event of acquisition or eviction.
Several of the affected villages fall under the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC). Tribal organisations have expressed particular concern that bringing protected tribal areas under the control of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) could erode constitutional safeguards, land rights, cultural identity and administrative autonomy, and weaken the RHAC’s self-governance powers.
Opposing the proposed plan, groups including the Rani Regional Tribal Sangha, Rani Regional All Bodo Students’ Union and Rani Regional Rabha Students’ Union submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Palasbari co-district commissioner on June 18, urging the government to protect the rights and interests of indigenous communities in the proposed project area. Residents and tribal leaders are now seeking clear answers from authorities on legal protections, rehabilitation and the timeline for any land acquisition.
