Thrilling Journey: Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla to Pilot NASA’s Axiom Mission 4 to Space – A Historic Moment for Northeast

Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to make history as the first Indian astronaut to journey to the International Space Station (ISS) on a private mission. Shukla has been selected as the pilot for Axiom Mission 4, scheduled for spring 2025. This groundbreaking mission will be commanded by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who serves as Axiom Space’s director of Human Spaceflight. Joining the crew as mission specialists are Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from the European Space Agency and Tibor Kapu from Hungary.

NASA will launch the mission from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida using a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. The 14-day mission aims to conduct scientific experiments, outreach programs, and commercial activities in microgravity, marking a collaborative effort between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Shukla’s credentials are impressive. A National Defence Academy graduate, he was commissioned into the IAF’s fighter stream in 2006 and has accumulated 2,000 flight hours on various aircraft, including the Su-30 MKI and MiG-29. He was promoted to Wing Commander in 2019, the same year he was selected for the IAF’s astronaut program. Shukla completed his basic training at Russia’s Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in 2021 and continued training at the Astronaut Training Facility in Bengaluru.

In March 2024, Shukla advanced to the rank of Group Captain, coinciding with his selection as the ‘prime’ astronaut for the Gaganyaan mission. Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 27, 2024, the Gaganyaan project represents India’s inaugural human spaceflight mission, aiming to send a crew of three into a 400 km orbit for a 3-day mission and safely return them to earth. Shukla’s achievements underscore his crucial role in advancing India’s space exploration efforts.
