Marko Hietala’s Emotional Decision: Why Leaving Nightwish Sparked Immediate Regret
In a recent interview with Jorge Botas of Metal Global, ex-NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala opened up about the reasons behind leaving the band in January 2021 and his journey since then. Hietala admitted that despite having regrets, his decision wasn’t solely about NIGHTWISH but about tackling his ongoing struggles with depression, anxiety, and a subsequent ADHD diagnosis. These mental health issues intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, ultimately prompting him to step away from the music scene to seek help and heal.
Hietala relocated to Spain with his wife and dog, seeking solitude and psychiatric guidance. He expressed how discovering his ADHD brought immense relief, allowing him to forgive his past actions shaped by the condition. Despite NIGHTWISH’s importance in his life, he cited internal organizational issues and his declining mental health as key factors behind his departure.
Reflecting on a potential reunion with the band, Marko didn’t rule it out but emphasized the need for significant changes in the band’s organizational structure. He expressed pride in his musical contributions to NIGHTWISH, appreciating the diversity and ambition of their work. Hietala acknowledged that issues had been growing since his divorce in 2016, exacerbating his depression and resulting in insomnia and chaos due to his attention disorder.
In the aftermath of his departure, NIGHTWISH filled his role with bassist Jukka Koskinen. Founding member Tuomas Holopainen and vocalist Floor Jansen both admitted to being blindsided by Hietala’s decision but understood his need for change. Despite lineup changes, the band remains committed to creating music, believing they still have much to offer.
Looking ahead, Marko Hietala is set to release a new solo album, “Roses From The Deep,” on February 7, 2025, through Nuclear Blast, marking a fresh chapter in his musical journey.
