Shocking Allegations: NEHU Teachers Expose Rs 94 Crore Financial Irregularities by VC Prof. PS Shukla in Meghalaya
The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) has accused Vice-Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla of significant financial misconduct in his role as chairman of the Building Committee. According to NEHUTA, Prof. Shukla and Prof. Sujata Gurudev, who holds an irregular position, bypassed standard procedures by selecting firms via nomination to initiate projects for NEHU’s Tura Campus, disregarding tendering norms.
NEHUTA President Lakhon Kma criticized the Building Committee’s approval of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for building hostels and an auditorium at the campus under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram. Kma highlighted the surprising involvement of the Manipur Tribal Development Corporation Ltd. (MTDCL) in the project, questioning the choice of an outside agency over those within Meghalaya.
Further concerns were raised regarding the issuance of work orders without proper advertisement as required by GOI financial rules, and the involvement of NEST-IN (TATA Steel) for a Food Testing Laboratory project, again bypassing an open tender process.
NEHUTA claims these actions reflect discriminatory practices against Meghalaya’s tribal communities and suggest an attempt by Prof. Shukla to undermine their rights. The teachers’ body is calling for accountability, emphasizing that such financial irregularities were unprecedented in NEHU’s history and tarnish the institution’s reputation. Notably, Prof. Shukla is currently on extended leave.
