Transformative Eco-Conscious Practices Unveiled at Brahmaputra Roundtable: Inspiring a Greener Future
The 14th Jeevan Kite River Festival, held directly on the serene riverbed of the Brahmaputra in Guwahati, featured the ‘Brahmaputra Roundtable,’ a unique gathering that underscored the critical need for community-driven, environmentally conscious initiatives to protect the river and its ecosystem. This innovative setting enabled participants to engage deeply with nature while deliberating pressing environmental issues.
Organized by the Jeevan Initiative, the roundtable convened a diverse group of experts, including Prof Sudeshna Bhattacharya from Gauhati University, environmental journalist Chandrani Sinha, Assamese artist Marshal Baruah, Ashadeep Baruah of Clocket, Luke Minkeng Lego of Ngok Siang from Arunachal Pradesh, Dr Kamal Kumar Tanti from the Centre for Environment and Climate Action Foundation, and Sabique Hasan Ahmed, co-founder of The Greenkeepers. The discussion was expertly moderated by environmental journalist Mubina Akhtar.
Suresh Ranjan Goduka, founder of the Jeevan Initiative, introduced ‘Sustainability Policy Indicators,’ highlighting community involvement as pivotal for fostering sustainable riverbank practices. The panelists stressed the need for a holistic, community-focused strategy for riverbank sustainability. Prof Bhattacharya advocated incorporating eco-conscious teachings from Vedic scriptures into educational curriculums, while Luke Minkeng Lego emphasized the threats to river dolphins from overfishing, calling for decisive action.
Dr Tanti spoke on the impact of climate change on river dynamics and aquatic life, urging the integration of indigenous knowledge into sustainable development planning. The event concluded with participants collectively committing to ongoing efforts to protect and sustain the Brahmaputra River, demonstrating the powerful impact of community initiatives in conservation. The roundtable was a testament to the necessity of collaborative environmental stewardship in maintaining the ecological integrity of vital waterways like the Brahmaputra.
