Shocking Revelation: Bengaluru’s Traffic Crawls at 10km in 34 Minutes – Among World’s Slowest After Barranquilla & Kolkata, Reveals TomTom Report
Bengaluru, often dubbed the IT capital of India, is grappling with severe traffic congestion, ranking as the world’s third slowest city for commute times, according to the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index. Commuters in Bengaluru spend an average of 34 minutes and 10 seconds to cover just 10 km, a notable increase from the previous year. The city falls behind only Barranquilla, Colombia, and Kolkata, India, in the global ranking, with Pune not far behind in fourth place.
This study highlights a troubling trend in urban traffic patterns across India, with multiple cities suffering from prolonged transit times. For instance, Hyderabad ranks 18th globally, with a 32-minute travel time for the same distance, followed by Chennai, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Ernakulam, Jaipur, and New Delhi, which all feature significantly high travel times compared to global averages.
The crux of Bengaluru’s traffic woes lies in the burgeoning number of private vehicles, with its roads accommodating over 2.5 million cars, surpassing New Delhi. Compounding the congestion, 2,000 new vehicles are registered daily, pushing infrastructure to its limits. These figures echo similar challenges faced in other global metropolises like London, Milan, and Toronto, showcasing the universal struggle with urban congestion.
TomTom’s assessment relies on sophisticated floating car data, analyzing a massive 737 billion km sample to monitor yearly shifts in traffic patterns worldwide. The index considers various elements, including road infrastructure, speed limits, congestion levels, and weather conditions, to provide a comprehensive evaluation.
As Bengaluru’s traffic challenges persist, they serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved urban planning and effective traffic management strategies to accommodate growing urban populations and prevent further deterioration of city life.
