Shreyas Iyer Set to Make History in IPL 2025: First Indian Cricketer to Achieve This Astonishing Feat!
Shreyas Iyer is set to make history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 as he becomes the 16th captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS). This move comes after a hefty purchase of Rs 26.75 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction, marking the second-highest bid in the league’s history. Iyer takes over the captaincy from England’s all-rounder Sam Curran, with wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma also having led the team briefly in IPL 2024.
Iyer is joining an elite group of cricketers, including Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, and Steve Smith, who have captained three different IPL franchises. Previously leading Delhi Capitals to their maiden final in 2020 and securing the 2024 title with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Iyer stands out as the first IPL-winning captain to be released in the following season.
Captaining PBKS presents Iyer with a chance to become the first captain to win titles with two different IPL teams. His leadership is anticipated to end Punjab Kings’ 17-year quest for their first-ever IPL title. Notably, Iyer’s previous achievements make him one of the most promising leaders in the league, alongside Hardik Pandya, who also eyes this historic milestone in 2025.
Iyer joins other distinguished PBKS captains, such as Yuvraj Singh, Adam Gilchrist, and KL Rahul. The challenges that await him include leading the Punjab-based franchise to their long-desired IPL glory, with rivals Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad each having had 14 captains in their history.
Reflecting on his auction experience, Iyer expressed surprise over the significant bid but is ready to take on the leadership mantle at PBKS, aiming to deliver a historic season for the franchise.
