Revolutionary Power: Indian Railways Unveils the World’s Most Powerful Hydrogen Train Engine
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Indian Railways has developed the world’s most powerful hydrogen-powered train engine, marking a major milestone in sustainable transport technologies. Speaking during the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention at the “Green Connections: Diaspora’s Contribution to Sustainable Development” session, Vaishnaw noted that only four nations currently produce such engines. The Indian engine remarkably delivers 1,200 horsepower, far surpassing the usual 500 to 600 horsepower of its counterparts.
The prototype is set for a trial run on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, although further system integration is required before the trial commences. Vaishnaw highlighted the transformative potential of hydrogen technology beyond railways, suggesting its applicability in sectors like trucking and marine transport.
He emphasized the significance of self-reliance, advocating for domestic production of components to bolster India’s technological infrastructure. Vaishnaw expressed confidence that this innovation will drive the nation towards enhanced self-sufficiency and leadership in sustainable transport technology.
