Record-Breaking Success: Emoinu Fish Festival 2025 Surpasses Expectations with 86,000 kg Sold
Imphal celebrated a significant achievement at the Emoinu Fish Festival 2025, hosted by the Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur at Hapta Kangjeibung. The festival not only reached but surpassed its sales goals, with fish production totaling 86,286 kilograms, exceeding the projected 80,000 kilograms, as reported by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR).
The festival’s record-breaking sales included Indian Major Carps (IMCs), exotic carps, and various indigenous fish species. Imphal West stood out among the districts with a production of 38,720 kilograms, followed by Bishnupur with 19,425 kilograms, Thoubal with 18,940 kilograms, and Imphal East contributing 4,720 kilograms. Additionally, districts such as Senapati, Tamenglong, and Ukhrul actively participated, with support from the Chief Executive Officers of Fish Farmers Development Agencies (FFDA) from Imphal and Bishnupur.
A centerpiece attraction was the sale of Nung-Nga, a highly prized indigenous riverine fish from the hill district rivers of Manipur. Approximately 1,000 kilograms of Nung-Nga were made available, sourced from farms belonging to Chungkham Kopeshwar Singh of Wangoi Makha Leikai and Ningthoujam Basanta Singh of Khordak village.
Equally popular was the locally cultivated Sareng (Wallago attu), which attracted large crowds, with stocks selling out briskly due to rising demand for this homegrown variety.
The festival also featured agro-horticultural produce, dry fish, and homemade items prepared by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from relief camps, generating Rs 3.60 lakh in sales and adding to the event’s overall success.
This exceptional turnout highlights the unwavering commitment of Manipur’s fish farmers and the Department of Fisheries in promoting sustainable fishery and aquaculture practices. It marks yet another milestone in the state’s mission towards achieving self-reliance in fish production, underscoring the dedication to bolstering the local economy and supporting community resilience.
