Shocking Accusation: Congress Slams BJP Government for Allegedly Funding Insurgent Group
Imphal, Manipur: Congress Criticizes BJP Government Over Financial Dealings with Militant Group
On Saturday, the Congress party in Manipur raised serious allegations against Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s BJP-led government, accusing it of financially supporting the Hmar People’s Convention – Democratic (HPC-D), a militant group under a Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement. The Congress claims that the state government disbursed Rs. 6.27 crore to the HPC-D amidst ongoing ethnic strife between the Meiteis and Kukis.
Keisham Meghachandra, president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, detailed these allegations during a press conference in Imphal. He disclosed that payments were made on July 9, 2024, to HPC-D representatives Lalneikung and Joshua through an HDFC bank account (A/C No. 50100882660900) using Cheque No. 226200. These transactions were reportedly part of the Umbrella Scheme for the Modernization of Police Forces.
Meghachandra raised concerns about potential guideline violations noted in the Accountant General of India’s report submitted to the state assembly. The Congress leader emphasized inconsistencies in the BJP government’s approach; despite previous resolutions to terminate the SoO agreement with Zo-Kuki armed groups—adopted by BJP legislators on January 21, 2024, and by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on February 29, 2024—these payments were still processed.
Urging transparency and accountability, Meghachandra called for a thorough investigation into the matter. The situation highlights ongoing political tensions in the region, as questions regarding the government’s actions remain unanswered amidst already strained communal relations.
