Revolutionary Breakthrough: JAXA & Kyoto University Unveil LignoSat, the World’s First Wooden Satellite
In December 2024, Japan made history in space technology with the launch of LignoSat, the world’s first wooden satellite. Developed by Japan’s Space Agency (JAXA) in collaboration with Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry, LignoSat is crafted from honoki magnolia wood, a type traditionally associated with Japanese artistry. This innovative satellite was launched along with five CubeSats into Earth’s orbit, approximately 400 km above the planet.
LignoSat, weighing 900 grams, features 10-cm-long wooden panels assembled using Japanese joinery techniques without screws or glue. This design blends advanced space technology with environmentally-friendly construction. The satellite’s six-month mission aims to explore the viability of using wood in space, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional materials like aluminum and titanium.
During its orbit, LignoSat will endure extreme temperature shifts from -100°C to 100°C every 45 minutes, transitioning between sunlight and darkness. Onboard sensors will report how wood copes with these conditions, including its structural strain, radiation response, and effectiveness in shielding delicate equipment from the geomagnetic field.
LignoSat addresses environmental concerns about space exploration, particularly space debris. Traditional satellites release aluminum oxide into the atmosphere during re-entry, lingering for years. In contrast, wooden satellites like LignoSat burn up entirely, minimizing environmental harm.
Beyond its immediate mission, LignoSat has far-reaching implications for future space habitats. Kyoto University’s forest science professor, Koji Murata, suggests wood might be more durable in space than on Earth due to the absence of rot-inducing water and oxygen. Former astronaut and Kyoto University researcher, Takao Doi, envisions using timber to build sustainable living and working spaces on the Moon and Mars, leveraging this renewable resource to support long-term space missions. This groundbreaking initiative signifies a new era in sustainable space exploration.
