Exciting Breakthrough: Government Set to Supercharge AI Future with 7 Chosen Firms in Bold Procurement Move
The Indian government is set to shortlist seven firms to potentially supply Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) for the ambitious Rs 10,370-crore IndiaAI Mission. The initiative aims to enhance the nation’s computing capacity by fast-tracking GPU procurement. The Ministry of Information Technology received bids from 19 entities following a tender issued in August last year. Potential frontrunners include Jio Platforms, Tata Communications, and Mumbai-based Yotta Data Services.
A key meeting with the selected bidders is scheduled for January 13, where they must present detailed technical proposals and operational plans. Companies are also required to develop a demo portal illustrating the user experience for accessing their GPUs. Although these firms have progressed in the selection process, the final contract awards have not yet been decided.
Preference in the selection is being given to entities with existing GPU capacity or a clear procurement strategy, sidelining resellers. Computing power derived from GPUs is vital for AI systems’ development and training, but remains a costly resource, dominated by Nvidia’s market presence.
The IndiaAI Mission is structured as a public-private partnership, with up to 50% viability gap funding. The project aims to make computing power available at reduced rates for start-ups and researchers, with plans to acquire at least 10,000 GPUs. Of the total budget, Rs 4,564 crore is allocated to building computing infrastructure.
The government’s mission also involves collaboration with the Power Ministry and other agencies to ensure a reliable power supply for the country’s expanding data centers – a vital component given the high energy demands of AI technologies. IT Secretary S. Krishnan highlighted the growing concern over power availability as AI adoption increases, with the International Energy Agency cautioning that data center electricity use could double by 2026, creating significant sustainability challenges for companies.
