The Urban Development Department of the Sikkim Government has introduced new regulations for restaurants, pubs, and discotheques in the state, aligning with recent directives from Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. These measures, announced on Wednesday, are designed to regulate nightlife and enhance public safety.
According to the new guidelines, all nightlife establishments must close by 11 PM. Additionally, anyone under 21 and students wearing uniforms are banned from entering these venues. This move aims to curb underage drinking and ensure adherence to state Excise laws.
The notification explicitly states that serving alcohol to individuals under 21 or to students in uniform is strictly prohibited. Establishments breaching these rules will face severe penalties, including a ₹50,000 fine and the potential suspension or revocation of trade licenses as per Section 13 of the Sikkim Trade Licence and Miscellaneous Rules, 2011.
Public reaction to the government’s decision is mixed. While many residents and parents support the initiative as a crucial step to safeguard the youth, some in the hospitality industry express concerns about potential negative impacts on business operations.
