Rediscover Neil Young’s Epic Masterpiece: Unleash the Emotional Power of ‘Oceanside Countryside’ in a Stunning SuperDeluxeEdition
Neil Young, known for his extensive archive of unreleased recordings, is set to unearth another gem next month with the release of “Oceanside Countryside.” Originally recorded in 1977, this album shares its name with CD 4 of last year’s “Archives Vol III,” yet presents slight variations. While some tracks like ‘Lost in Space,’ ‘Captain Kennedy,’ and ‘The Old Homestead’ found their way onto the 1980 album “Hawks and Doves,” others like ‘Sail Away,’ ‘Goin’ Back,’ ‘Human Highway,’ ‘It Might Have Been,’ and ‘Pocahontas’ mirror the versions on “Archives Vol III.”
However, ‘Field of Opportunity’ and ‘Dance Dance Dance’ are unique in this collection, featuring Young himself on backing vocals—a departure from the versions on “Archives Vol III.” Young emphasizes that “These songs are the original mixes done at the time of the recordings,” lending an authentic touch to the new release.
Side One, titled Oceanside, was recorded in Florida and Malibu, showcasing Young’s multi-instrumental prowess. Meanwhile, Countryside on Side Two was crafted in Nashville, with contributions from Ben Keith, Joe Osborn, and others.
“Oceanside Countryside” is a part of Neil’s Analog Originals Series (AOS), following the 50th-anniversary clear vinyl release of “On The Beach” and multiple discs in the “Official Release Series.” This can make it challenging to navigate through Young’s myriad of releases, given previous lost albums like “Hitchhiker” appeared under the Special Release Series (SRS).
While a CD version won’t be available, fans can look forward to a vinyl release on February 14, 2025, through Reprise Records. Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, a limited clear vinyl edition will be offered by select retailers. This release promises a compelling dive into Neil Young’s storied musical journey.
