Unstoppable Triumph: Gukesh D, Manu Bhaker, Harmanpreet Singh, and Praveen Kumar Honored with Prestigious Khel Ratna Award
In a significant ceremony scheduled for January 17 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu will present the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award 2024 to distinguished athletes Gukesh D, Manu Bhaker, Harmanpreet Singh, and Praveen Kumar. This announcement, made by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, highlights India’s premier sporting honors.
Gukesh D, who recently became the youngest World Chess Champion by defeating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore, earns his place among the elite recipients. Shooter Manu Bhaker, an accomplished athlete who secured two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, also joins the list. Hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh helped India attain their second consecutive bronze in men’s hockey, while para-athlete Praveen Kumar triumphed with a gold in high jump T64 at the Paralympics.
In addition to these recognitions, 32 athletes were named for the prestigious Arjuna Awards, acknowledging their outstanding performances across various sports in 2024. Noteworthy names include Jyothi Yarraji, Annu Rani, Vantika Agrawal, and others who have excelled in their respective fields.
Honorary Arjuna Lifetime Awards are bestowed upon former cyclist Sucha Singh and para-swimmer Murlikant Rajaram Petkar. The Dronacharya Award 2024 recognizes the coaching excellence of Subhash Rana, Deepali Deshpande, Sandeep Sangwan, along with S Muralidharan and Armando Agnelo Colaco in the lifetime category.
Additionally, the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar goes to the Physical Education Foundation of India, while the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy 2024 is awarded to Chandigarh University, with runner-up titles to Lovely Professional University and Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.
These accolades underscore the dynamic achievements and contributions of Indian athletes and institutions to sports, fostering a culture of excellence and commitment.
