Outrage as Bangladesh Court Sensationally Rejects Bail for Hindu Monk
In Chattogram, Bangladesh, the Metropolitan Sessions Judge court denied bail to Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges. Das, a former leader within the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was accused of desecrating the national flag, although his defense refuted the allegation. Das was arrested at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on November 25 and transported to Chattogram, where his initial bail plea was also rejected, fueling protests among the Hindu community.
During the recent hearing, Public Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan successfully argued against his release, while a defense team of 11 lawyers contended the charges were baseless. Despite their efforts, the court maintained its stance, once again denying bail after a thorough 30-minute session overseen by Judge Mohammad Saiful Islam. The arrest and subsequent violence led to the death of government prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif, exacerbating regional tensions.
The backdrop to Das’s arrest is a politically charged atmosphere following the rise of Muhammad Yunus’s interim government and the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid widespread unrest. Tensions have escalated, notably affecting the Hindu minority and their places of worship. The specific sedition case was initiated on October 31 at Chattogram’s Kotwali police station, targeting Das and 18 others for alleged flag desecration. The incident has drawn attention to the precarious state of intercommunal relations in Bangladesh under the new regime.
