Shock in Meghalaya: Police Heroically Arrest Trio from Assam with Heroin Worth Lakhs
Meghalaya Police arrested three individuals from Assam for possession of heroin valued at several lakhs during a drug enforcement operation at 15th Mile, GS Road, Byrnihat on January 1, 2025. The suspects, identified as Ekramul Hussain, aged 30, Monjuwara Begum, 32, and Nihar Begum, 30, were found with approximately 254.16 grams of heroin, ₹58,380 in cash, and four mobile phones, as per a press release from the Superintendent of Police’s office.
The police suspect that the arrested individuals were involved in sourcing drugs from distributors based in neighboring states and had accumulated considerable wealth through drug peddling. A Special Investigation Team, headed by the Additional Superintendent of Police, has been set up to delve into their financial transactions. This team will work on confiscating any illegally acquired property from the accused and prepare a proposal for their preventive detention under the PITNDPS Act of 1988.
The case has been officially registered at Nongpoh Police Station under sections 21(c), 27A, and 29 of the NDPS Act. The police are also investigating the potential existence of cross-border drug distribution networks.
This arrest highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the region, prompting strong law enforcement responses. The police are actively working to dismantle networks operating across state lines and curb the menace of drug peddling, thus safeguarding the community and region from the harmful impacts of drug abuse.
