Breaking News: Shocking Drug Bust in Ri Bhoi—Assam Trio Caught with Rs 1 Crore in Heroin
Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, police in Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya, apprehended three individuals for drug peddling, including two women, and seized 254.16 grams of heroin. The haul, valued at about Rs 1 crore, highlights the ongoing challenges in combating drug-related crimes in the region.
The arrested individuals, identified as Ekramul Hussain, Monjuwara Begum, and Nihar Begum, hail from Assam and were detained at 15th Mile in Byrnihat. Authorities suspect that the trio sourced the heroin from other states, leveraging these operations to accumulate substantial wealth through illegal means.
Alongside the narcotics, the police recovered cash amounting to Rs 58,380 and four mobile phones from the suspects. The crackdown has led to the registration of a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Nongpoh police station.
In a bid to unearth the full extent of the drug network, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established. The SIT is tasked with exploring the suspects’ connections with other drug dealers and scrutinizing their financial transactions. The team will also take necessary steps to seize any assets acquired through illicit activities.
This successful operation underscores law enforcement’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking issues in Meghalaya and beyond. The proactive approach by the police sets a strong precedent for future efforts in the region’s ongoing battle against narcotics-related crime.
